Extreme Couponing and Hoarders

Sometime in the 1930s or so it became really offensive to use the word "freak," as in displaying a giant placard with the words, "Come and See the Freak Show." No doubt that was beneficial for humankind, although the folks who would eventually be called little people lost their primary source of income. Thank you History Channel documentary from a few years ago. You were really interesting and I totally stayed awake too.

I can't help but think that both TLC and A&E have some polite little freak shows going on right now with their shows about the folks who dive into dumpsters for coupons and buy two hundred boxes of spaghetti at a time. Saving feces and pizza boxes and chickens
is too twisted for color television.
Don't you love "Steel Magnolias"? I don't actually watch it anymore. I've got it memorized. I digress.

Did I just say the people on those shows are freaks? Hmmm...I guess I did. I am awful. I surely do LOVE those shows though. Back in da day, the traveling carnivals were extremely profitable. A ha! Imagine that...humankind has not changed all that much, has it? Anyone a few standard deviations from the mean is inevitably a subject of interest. Those subjects of interest (i.e. the not-so-politely titled "freaks" are quite savvy to capitalize on our interest). Given their savvy and our willingness to pay to watch, who is so freakish...the unusual or the voyeur? I'll tell you right now that I feel quite freakish sitting on the couch with my mouth gaping open watching someone spend eight hours in a grocery store or seeing some dude with a big beard living with hundreds of rats.

Now this post just wouldn't be complete without a little confessional. I really, really want to get the Sunday paper and get me some coupons and track when stuff goes on sale and save a whole bunch of money. You know though, I just don't think I am going to prepare for the apocalypse every time I go to Publix. That just seems like too much damn trouble. If I spent my time doing that, I wouldn't have time to watch all those crazy people on TLC.

oh, and P.S. Mommy Lipstick (aka Martha Stewart) told me that Hoarders made her want to throw away everything she hadn't used in the last fifteen minutes. I told her it made me feel organized. I only have like, seventeen loads of laundry instead of eighty. Also, in my favor is that I do not harbor small animals under that laundry, although yesterday Pretty Girl saw an ant on the floor and totally freaked out.

Hoarders totally made me want to clean out the basement! I am a minimalist I don't have a lot of things but what I do have I tend to hold onto forever. So in a strange way I can relate to those "freaks" and it scares me. I fear my degrees of separation can be measured in decimals.

That TLC show Extreme Couponers is a BIG hot topic among us couponers. Those people are NOT normal and most of us are just buying a normal 2-3 bottles of free mustard not 72! she is a hoarder and giving us a bad name!!

I will admit I live to coupon and I LOVE to see my grocery receipt of $101 spent $92 saved! I went into CVS yesterday and bought 2 bottles of laundry detergent, 3 bag of doritos, 2 toothbrushes, 5 12pks of Cokes, 2 cans of Pringles, and 2 bottles of mens body wash and only spent around $20.

If you really are interested I can give you some websites that are awesome and will help you a ton on getting started. my email is linked so just let me know,

I cannot believe the people on the coupon show! They need to do that for homeless shelters and food banks. Not to prepare for the apocalypse!

I want to know where TLC and A&E find these strange people.

Haha I watched Extreme Couponing the other day...totally fascinating. I admit I think they are a bit "freakish" but I also admire how much money they save!

You know, I've never thought of it that way, but how true! These shows really do take the place of the "freak shows" that used to be. I'm not sure if that makes me feel better or worse about these shows, but it is definitely eye-opening. Thanks for the insight.

The hoarders show looks so scary we won't even watch it, how bad is that! You are spot-on about the "freak show" Miss Lipstick.

Sending you smiles,

Hello, old friend...just found your website. :-) Anyway, now as a mother of 3 and a stepmom of 1, I have been given the wonderful opportunity to stay at home with my girls. One of the ways God has blessed us to make this change is through couponing. BUT, in no way like the show. I just started this year after attending a free class by Shana, the lady who runs the blog mymemphismommy.com. She is down to earth, realistic, and in no way like the TLC shows. When you are bored, check out her site...I think you will be impressed! Take care!

@Bathwater.....I sorta doubt your "decimal" comment. Very serious. Minimalist with valued treasures and oh yes, brilliant writer....hmmm, I would say I haven't seen ANY of those shows with anyone like that.
