Even the clothes aren't obnoxious. They seem utilitarian, warm, protective.
Men's figure skating is also incredibly difficult and undeniably gravity defying. Then why, oh why must we watch that display of athleticism while simultaneously stomaching sequins, ruffles, and that weird, stretchy flesh colored fabric? Take this for example:

It sort of makes me squirmy, and not in a good way. I'm just sayin'.

Snowboarding is amazing to watch, I agree. But I suppose I'm "old school" in that I prefer the alpine skiing events. However, in terms of men's figure skating, I'm right there with you!
Nice posting! This is place where You never can stop to get inspired! Thanks for that
Yes, johnny Weir's wardrobe gets an F from me. I wish they wore the suits as men wore 50 years ago. ;-) What about Lindsey Jacobellis? So sad. I think she has learned her lesson several times over as far as her "showing off" 4 years ago at the Olympics. I'm obsessed, too. xoxo
I just discover your blog ! Very nice one ... I continue my reading....

Ha, yes watching the X-Games events versus a competitive curling matching in Vancouver is not even comparable.
Not to sound all old school here, but let me just go old-school-crankenstein for a moment: could we simply lose the fur, the feathers, the rhinestones and most of the black gloves? As a former skater we understand that on men's costumes discreetly placed sequins or rhinestones in an UNDERSTATED way can make a costume sing, lengthening one's line, enhancing the look tremendously. But all of this frou-frou is just way too much.
Harrumph.

PS: So glad you enjoyed the reunion!
I'm starting to think that I'm one of the only people not watching the olympics... hm... does that make me a bad American?
I love the X Games. Years ago I had the chance to go to the (even lower on the totem pole of sporting events) Gravity Games when they arrived in Cleveland. It's all skate and wake boarding. I'd rather watch skate boarding... I think it's due to my birth in the mid-70's. Skate boarding, the Ramones and the Brady Bunch - that pretty much sums up my childhood.
My husband and I were also discussing this last night! he said the men's skating is so much better than women's because they are men and more powerful with jumps, blah blah blah. He's right of course, but we both agreed that we could do without the outfits and the "dancing" part of the competition. I wish they'd just go out on the ice and have a jumping competition! Lol!
P.S.- Johnny Weir is probably the most hilarious man I've ever seen in my life. I don't even think there are worrds.
I haven't had much time to watch the games...but I am going to try tonigt. Also I left something for you on my blog :)
I was not surprised at all to see Johnny Weir in a corset and pink, he's that flamboyant! The figure skating was fun to watch and I just posted about my new olympic crush :)
I do not understand why they have to wear those costumes either! I think it makes them all look like they prefer to be romantically involved with people of the same sex, yet half of them are married! Why is there a need to be so flamboyant?!
I don't believe the costumes have ever been as horrifyingly flamboyant as they have this year! Feather gloves???
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! i'm with you. something to do with the sort who choose the sport, maybe? or the lines an outfit of Lycra shows...?
@spandex shorts and @Morgane...many thanks and welcome! I am glad that you are here!
@TP...oh, I just love it when you get all crackenstein! too funny!
@-A...wow, Gravity Games. Way cool. I would love to see that too.
@USCEmily...I KNOW!!! Way to go for saying it! and then they are married...
haha - i gotta admit that i giggle a little at the Men's Double Luge...
I have enjoyed watching the games when I have time. The costumes are def. interesting! ha ha!
My kids are mentioning these Olympic events from discussions in school. Therefore I am just keeping up with the basics to be somewhat informed.
I will never understand their outfits. I just won't.
You're so lucky. We can't get the Olympics on TV here unless we subscribe to a particular cable company, which we don't. I even looked at the price, and we have to sign for a WHOLE YEAR. Sigh.
I agree about the skater's costumes.
Did you see the man with the ring of roses on his head?
