I was just in a retail location and a woman inquired of me, "a colored girl just gave me this price. I just wanted to double check with you to make sure it was right."
Were it physiologically possible for my blood to boil, it would have. Actually I am shaking as I type this. Please forgive my parenthetical title. It was my verbal expression.

Oh. My. Gosh. I have no other words.
Oh my god. When people want to say those things to me, I just say back, I cannot have that conversation with you. And I walk away.
Ugh my dad uses that word and I keep telling him it is wrong but he grew up with it and nothing will change it.
Yikes--that must have been uncomfortable to say the least.
For me, those incidents are a good reality check in that we as a society have so much improvement to make.
Unbelievable. Except it's not. It is a painful reminder we're never as far along as we think we are, and it also prompts a thank you for you Miss Lipstick, it's a good jolt.
Hope you have a grand weekend,
tp
Please tell me this idiot was 100 years old and totally missed the Civil Rights movement. My gosh. Unbelievable! But not really. Just really disheartening.
Disgusting... how did you respond?
It is unbelievable that there are still people out there who think in terms of the color of someone's skin. I agree with Preppy 101...I hope the woman was older than dirt. As Suburban Princess commented, sometimes folks of my parents' generation unfortunately still think that way.
WTF is right!
Sadly y'all, the person was not very elderly. Not at all.
The setting (work) mandated a restrained response...I have to admit I said "WTF??" as soon as I could (which was actually when I was telling the story to a friend a few minutes after it happened).
Not real ladylike, I know.
How horrible, I thought we had gotten past stuff like that!
It is so sad that some people are still very ignorant. So sad.
Haha... Some people!! I would have looked her square in the face and said, "Well, she IS the manager, but I can go double check with her if you'd like"...
FG :)
@Jennifer...I love it! I *wish* I was good with the quick comeback!
I once had a near riot at the counter at work directly resulting from a customer saying a very similar comment and causing a fight to almost break out between two customers. People had to be separated, the police were called, and although cooler heads prevailed it was an "interesting day" to say the least.
It is as if some people are relics from an earlier time period or really stupid when they make a comment like that(or both). There will always be people that judge others that are different from them. This will never go away completely. But it's how the rest of us react to them that is important.
Funny story: I've been accused of being a racist once at work in my entire career. It was by a middle aged woman who was a drug seeker that wanted to get oxycodone pills really early (big suprise huh). The odd detail to this story is that we are both white! She was a walking do not use drugs commercial if you know what I mean!
terribly sad, but its the society that we live in. We have to ensure that it does not pass down to the next generation! Living in the south....sad to say but I still hear it sometimes myself.
I think this situation calls for lots of WTFs, in the title and wherever else they can fit in! Really depressing.
