HIETYHGIATYAMDAILYSVVVM

That long and seemingly random list of letters, dear readers, is actually an acronym for a favorite saying that Daddy Lipstick and I have for one another. We say it to each other at the end of phone conversations and sign it at the end of emails.

We also write it at the end of letters. Probably the most memorable time was at the close of a letter Daddy Lipstick sent during my junior year of high school. I was at cheerleading camp and he wrote a long letter-at least a few pages-about the little things at home that were occurring in my absence and how much he and Mommy Lipstick missed me. The other girls were incredulous. "Your dad wrote that?" one said. "My dad wouldn't have that much to say to me," another commented. The rest of the girls laughed and agreed. I was a bit sad for them, but still completely engrossed in my letter. I am still grateful beyond my ability to express it that my father has always had that much to say to me.

Daddy Lipstick has taken me on "Days Out" my whole life. What this means is that we would leave in the morning and go exploring for the entire day. We picked wildflowers on the side of the road; looked at Christmas lights; rode down the highway with the windows rolled down when it below freezing just for fun; watched movies; ate lots of Mexican food; met Mr. Greenhaw; listened to every song the Beatles ever sang; spent countless hours in the library and riding around Memphis and Shelby Forest; rode an elevator up thirty stories and when someone very snobby asked what we were doing, we replied, "we're looking for the restroom"; browsed lots of used bookstores and record stores; and rode around some more.

Perhaps the three most important things a father can give a child are his love, his patience, and his interest. Thank you Daddy Lipstick for all three.
Have I Ever Told You How Glad I Am That You Are My Daddy And That I Love You So Very Very Very Much?

Hi Darling,
HIETYHGIATYAMLGATILYSVVVM!
You made my Father's Day! On how I cherish those "Days Out" when we had no real agenda for the day but just did anything within reason you wanted to do and then we even did some things without reason that you wanted to do like climb that forbidden shaky tower so we could see for miles around. I'm glad we talked Mr. Greenhaw into letting us "scale the utmost heights" and I'm glad also that we didn't break our adventuresome little necks! If Truffle knew that we were that high off the ground she would have turned us both inside out and upside down! We'd both been put on restriction! Darling, you are the absolute best daughter in the whole world. HIETYHGIATYAMLGATILYSVVVM!

Hey Sweetie,

That is so sweet. Daddy Lipstick says you really made his day. AND now I just found out about this little mystery. And you would both have been on restriction is an understatement. Now, we'll just say "Oh the joys of childhood." But remember Daddy Lipstick and JBB are having "days out" now.

LUF,
Mommy Lipstick

Your family is awesome...

I am so glad fathers like Daddy Lipstick exist. My father lives in Washington and I haven't seen him in almost 12 years. He calls weekly and seems to think that's an acceptable substitute.

Three cheers for Daddy Lipstick! (and Mommy Lipstick too!)

Okay, between what you wrote, what your dad wrote and what your mom wrote, I'm tearing up here at work and wishing my daddy wasn't 2000 miles away. :o(

Oh. My. Word. I was already all mushy over this, and then what did I see? Daddy Lipstick's comment. Tissue, we need tissue.

You are remarkable Miss Lipstick, and now we have just a skosh of an idea where some of the gift comes from.

My-oh-my, thank you for sharing this one and thanks to Daddy Lipstick as well.

That is a wonderful post...but what really makes it all the more special is the two comments from your Dad and Mom. The three of you are wonderful and loving people. Thank you for being an example to the rest of the world.

Dammitt...cried when i read your post, but cried more at your dad's response.

I didn't have a dad like that: i had an old-school 'hands-off" dad who I now have a cordial but awkward relationship with.

You're a lucky, lucky girl :)

I know I'm really late to the party on this post but I absolutely LOVED IT! I, too, am super close to my daddy and he has always given me his time, his interest and his love. There is nothing like having wonderful, loving parents like we do. You have reminded how truly blessed I am and I appreciate it. Reading your dad (and mom's) comment on this post was just the icing on the cupcake! How awesome!
