The Attention Deficit (or Thank You Stephenie Meyer)

When did TV get so boring? My precious House (sigh...) is the only show that captures my full attention. Every other show is really just background noise for me while I peruse fun and fabulous things on The Internet.

I was starting to think that I was becoming one of those multi-media, multi-tasking, over-stimulation addicts, but then...along came Twilight.

I admit I bought it almost begrudgingly, just wanting to see what could possibly be soooooo fabulous about an awkward teenager falling in love with a vampire. I read the first few chapters without any speed or urgency. I was starting to think that I just didn't get it, but then before I knew it, I was completely hooked. It took me longer to read the first five chapters of Twilight than it has taken me to read Eclipse.

I have rediscovered the pleasure of being curled up under a fuzzy blanket while being completely engrossed in a book. Remember that phrase, "willing suspension of disbelief"? I am pretty sure I learned it in somewhere in high school English. Stephenie Meyer is the new master. Her juxtaposition of the mundane with the mystical makes the whole vampire story seem...well, logical. I mean, my goodness, I want to be a Cullen too.

The last five or six hundred page book I read before this series was in pharmacy school. It was not fun. There's nothing like school to make you hate books. I could probably count on one hand the number of actual books I've read since graduation. The first year out of school I think I only read People magazine or if I was feeling intellectual, In Style.

Now I can't wait to find another engrossing book. I am almost sad to finish Breaking Dawn. I am going to miss Edward and Bella. So I need some suggestions. What are your favorite books?

And finally a thank you to Stephenie Meyer for providing some blissful distraction during a painful week isn't the only gratitude I have.

Thank you, dear blog friends for your comforting comments. Thank you for reading my last couple of grief-stricken posts. I don't know what is more therapeutic...writing it out or reading the responses, but y'all, I feel better. I wish I could hug you all. I would even be wiping away tears of joy right now if I weren't so determined to not have to throw away a third pair of contacts this week.

YOu know i am a big Twilight fan! I just finished the series last night for the second time.. I was so sad to finish again...
I read some chick lit in between, but keep wanting to go back to Edward and Bella...
Did you see the movie?

I loved the Twilight series too! Another good series is the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. She also does a series about a succubus named Georgia Kincaide that is geared more toward adults. Succubus Blues is the first one in that series. They are really good.

I understand about the TV thing...it all (except our "House") is just so predicable!

Those books were so darn addicting! Even though I found Bella highly irritating, I just couldn't Stop Reading. Such good stuff.

It's a good thing that SM didn't describe Edward as a "Young Sly Stallone" or you'd REALLY be done in. :o)

Hope you are all starting to feel better. Hang in there.

I feel like I need to do an article from your quote "there's nothing like school to make you hate books." That is a profound statement. But true I am afraid. I love your use of the word juxtaposition ;-) You make a retired English teacher happy!! {also like "willing suspension of disbelief"} xoxo

I recently fell in love with the "Odd Thomas" series of books by Dean Koontz. The main character is quirky, big-hearted, brave and funny. The books are written in the first person and Odd has a continuous witty inner monologue that is droll at times and heart-achingly sad at others. I became disenchanted with Dean Koontz's writing in the late 80's, but his lifeview has changed since then and that has beneficially affected his writing. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I love to read and definitely agree that as much as I do love TV I don't get into a lot of shows. My favorites right now are Big Love and 30 Rock. Other than that, I'll be reading on the couch!

Can you send some boring TV vibes my way please? I watch way too much and should seriously consider counseling! I'd much rather be curled up, reading a fab book, but I can't seem to tear myself away from the tube!

I read a few posts down and hope that things are better for you.

Great blog.

I'm 644 pages into Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. IT's more than 1000 pages long, but it's such a fun read. It's about the building of a cathedral in the dark ages and all of the drama surrounding it. It's SUCH a page turner, and I highly recommend it.
There is a sequel called World Without End, which I just may have to pick up, dependingo nhow the curent book finished.
But... I'm also considering the Twilight series. I'm intrigued to find out what all the buzz is about.

Omg, you so had me at "AOT." LOVE it. My mom was a KD, and my dad, bless his heart, for the life of him is determined to figure it out. Even if he did, he just still wouldn't get it. My mom's tease to him "apples, oranges, and tomatos." Hehe. Xoxo-BLC

While most TV is garbage, we both really get a kick out of Psyche. Have you ever seen it?

OMG - I know this comment is a late addition, but I just HAD to say something. I felt the same exact way about finishing the series... and I finished Breaking Dawn right around the same time as you. I was soooooo freaking sad - I didn't want it to end! I mean, is she continuing the series or what??

And I tell ya, I haven't found anything that's hooked me yet. I'm trying to read Water For Elephants right now - and it's okay - but it's no addictive vampire love story. I think I'm going to try Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series next. I've heard it's not 'lovey dovey vampirey' but it's a vampire series all the same - and I think I need that right now.

Anyway, I FEEL YOU GIRL... you are not alone!!
