Work Purse

Nonna is my grandmother. She is, for me, the Original Fabulous Working Mother. She handled new accounts at the same bank for 47 years. Her desk was immediately on the right as you walked in the door. She was always there wearing sparkly jewelry, luscious perfume, and of course, lipstick. Even though she is retired now, she is never without the trifecta of style.

If I had to pick one word to describe Nonna, it would be vivacious. She has always been this way. She has a picture from about 1945 in which she is standing in the snow wearing a bikini, high heels, and a long fur coat. I can only dream of being this fabulous.

Anyway, I could go on and on about Nonna's vivaciousness and amazing sense of style. I'll try to reign myself in. When I was litte, Nonna, my Mother, and I would go shopping on Saturdays. Nonna was always looking for the same three things: a work purse, a slip that was black at the bottom and white at the top, and a Judy Bond blouse. She would occasionally find a work purse, I don't think that kind of slip has ever existed, and I think the Judy Bond blouse thing was mostly a joke.

Well, now Lipstick needs a work purse in the worst way. I would like a nice large LV bag. I would also like to win the lottery and be a foot taller. I like Cole Haan bags too, but same problem. I seem to have a knack for picking out bags that cost $1,135. I guess I am just brimming with talent. I like Coach bags well enough, but they are ubiquitous around here. So much so that they are the Redneck Luxury Item Du Jour.

I think I have found my work purse. The Le Pliage from Longchamp. I know that this bag is probably the Redneck Luxury Item Du Jour in Europe (what do you think Europafox?), but I can't think of a soul around here that has one. Best of all you can even create you own by clicking here I remember a post from Tres Poshe Preppy about spending hours on the color selector on the Bonnanno's site. (some trivia about Lipstick...TPP inspired my blog). And here is where you fabulous visitors to Lipstickland come in. I was thinking black, brown, my initials on the leather, and nickel hardware, but then I changed my mind. About a dozen times. I need some tres help, s'il vous plait!

I love my Longchamps. I've been using them to carry my books all through college (5 years and running... yikes) and they are amazing.

They definitely stand the test of time but it is too fun to pick a new one each semester I just can't help it. I have black, brown, navy, red, mauve, khaki, and white still. Lost a blue and a green somewhere along the way... Any color you pick will be fabulous!

Oh, and if you're not stuck on designing a custom one, I'd check out e-bay. I've gotten a couple steals on there!

Your Nonna sounds a lot like my grandma - who is so fashionable and so hip. She would never dream of leaving the house without lipstick (or the rest of "her face" as she puts it). I'll never forget the first time I accompanied her to Bloomingdale's and she headed straight for the Ferragamos and Bruno Maglis - "she has bad feed and needs a full leather sole". Love it!

Anyways, love the Longchamps bag - I like the black/brown combo and love nickel accessories. I haven't even looked at the website, but I'm a girl who goes for classic colors and black goes with everything.

And Redneck item du jour - you always crack me up!

Oops! You're gonna call ME a Redneck!

That would be Longchamp (sans the S)

ok, next winter I'm pulling a Nonna.
And the bag, i love how it is in the picture! it's your first one, right? So I'd go black for sure. Too useful.

Your Nonna sounds awesome. :)

I have that Longchamps bag, and like it. It does tend to get kind of crappy fast and lose it's shape. I use it as a spare diaper bag now, and it's great, but it has lost it's fancy look. Or perhaps I'm just a slob. Could be.

I would go black and for sure with your intitials.
Now I want one and JUST bought a "fancy" purse. Dammit!

I have the black one in the picture...in fact, E saw it and said, "Mama, you already *have* that purse!" It's a great errand bag with the kiddos -- just throw a diaper and some wipes and you are good to go.

Your design sounds fabulous! Go for it!

Ahh, thanks for the mention! So sweet! :)

I still LOVE my Longchamp bags! Call me a redneck if you must! ;) I have way too many and even though in my neighborhood they are on about every arm, I will always love them. So classic! I can't really help you out, all your choices are great. Trust me, you will want another. I use my navy, black and chocolate brown the most, if that helps.

Loved the story about your grandma. I had one very elegant grandma and one very 'Martha Stewart' and I have fond memories of them both. I too could only hope to be as fabulous!

The bag is great and I also have a grandmother that is just pure sass and class!

I laughed when you mentioned the Coach thing...I used to be a Personal Trainer and my snotty client made the comment that Coach is "poor man's designer". Funny, but every time I see it now I hear her saying that.

I love the Nonna story. You should share more of them. She sounds very inspirational!

I love the purse. But a question- why a work purse? Is there a difference between a work purse and a purse that Stays at Home?

Teasing, of course!

Bag shmag. Carry your stuff in a grocery bag. That's what I do! I'm not kidding. Too broke to buy anything else right now ;(.

Buy what you like and can afford, who cares what anyone else thinks?

Oh my gosh, another fabulous Lipstick story...sigh. It's always so good to read one of your posts. Nonna is too cool, although we are probably with you on the two-tone slip's existence...hhhm.

As far as the bag goes, we would suggest the black, it *does* last forever and you'll be so pleased you bought it.

Grins and giggles...
